Gollops Star

DEVELOPMENT HISTORY / THE ORIGINAL GAME

Before the 3D battlefield.

A look back at the original 2D browser game and the tactical foundations carried into Gollops Star today.

Where the game began

The original idea grew from a love of classic turn-based tactics and a challenge: could a good squad combat game run in a browser, built in pure JavaScript? Read the creator’s full story in the developer Q&A →

Before the current 3D version, Gollops Star took shape as a top-down, 2D browser game: a squad, a hostile station and a set of orders to carry out one turn at a time. The original version remains playable on mykeblack.com.

That earlier build brings the tactical decisions into a single command screen. The battlefield sits beside the selected soldier’s health, action points and combat feed, with movement, aimed shots, bracing and overwatch controls below. It established the squad-command format that continues in the current game.

From top-down tactics to a 3D station

The newer game changes how the battlefield is presented, while keeping the focus on individual soldiers, action points and careful orders. The latest development work adds a 3D view, an artwork-based tactical dock and a dedicated mobile button layout.

Try the earlier version

The original build is a separate game on a different website. Browser saves are local to each site, so progress does not transfer automatically between the two versions.
